Foreign-owned companies operating in Saudi Arabia are subject to a standard corporate income tax of 20% on their net adjusted taxable profit attributable to non-Saudi and non-GCC ownership. The rule is a core part of how the Kingdom treats international businesses and investors.
A company that is entirely foreign-owned generally pays 20% on 100% of its taxable profit. In mixed ventures that combine Saudi or GCC partners with foreign owners, income tax applies only to the foreign ownership share, while the Saudi or GCC share is generally subject to Zakat instead. Non-resident companies that operate through a permanent establishment or branch in the Kingdom are also taxed at 20% on the income attributable to that activity.
Importantly, the tax is calculated on adjusted taxable profit, not simply the accounting net profit. Deductible expenses and specific tax adjustments determine the final figure, so the amount payable equals 20% multiplied by the taxable profit. There is no fixed fee for the tax itself.
Filing and deadlines
The annual income-tax return and final payment are due through ZATCA electronic services within 120 days after the end of the fiscal year. In applicable cases, three advance payments may fall due on the last day of the 6th, 9th, and 12th months of the tax year. Late advance payments carry a penalty of 1% for each 30-day period of delay.
Some activities sit outside the standard rate. Oil and hydrocarbon production companies are taxed at higher rates ranging from 50% to 85%. Meanwhile, certain special economic zones may offer different rates or incentives, with eligibility depending on the zone, the activity, the licence, and the applicable rules.
For the expat business community and international investors, understanding these obligations is essential for accurate budgeting, timely filing, and avoiding penalties as the Kingdom continues to broaden its appeal to foreign capital.
