AlUla is a vast, open destination where landmarks sit far apart across deserts, valleys, and ancient oases. Unlike a dense city, you cannot simply walk between its highlights, so planning your transport ahead of time makes a real difference. Whether you're heading to Hegra, Maraya, Elephant Rock, or exploring the Old Town, here's how to move around comfortably.

Renting a car

Renting a car is the most flexible option if you want to explore at your own pace. Several rental providers operate from AlUla International Airport, including Budget Saudi Arabia, Lumi Car Rental, and Alrehaili Car Rental. Rates vary by vehicle type and how early you book, and no fixed official tariff is published, so compare prices and reserve ahead during peak seasons.

Keep in mind that a car gives you freedom for the town, hotels, and viewpoints — but major archaeological sites like Hegra, Dadan, and Jabal Ikmah generally require booked tours or authorized transport rather than independent vehicle access.

Taxis, ride-hailing, and transfers

A limited number of taxis are available at the airport on a first-come, first-served basis, and taxis also operate within AlUla town. There is no fixed official fare, so confirm the price before setting off.

  • Ride-hailing apps: availability is inconsistent, so don't rely on them alone.
  • Hotel transfers: many hotels and resorts arrange airport and attraction transfers, with prices and schedules varying by property.
  • Dependable options: for Hegra, Maraya, Elephant Rock, and remote valleys, private cars, taxis, or pre-booked transfers are the most reliable.

Hop-on, hop-off shuttles

A seasonal hop-on, hop-off shuttle network makes it easy to reach key landmarks without driving. Three routes — Red, Green, and Yellow — operate from Winter Park and stop at different attractions across AlUla. Exact fares and operating dates change by season, so check the latest schedule before you travel.

Public buses

A year-round public bus route connects Eskan with AlJadidah, passing through Aziziya, AlMahash, and AlRuzayqiyah. Buses run approximately every 30 minutes during service hours, making this a budget-friendly way to move between residential and central areas. No official fare was identified, so confirm locally.

Old Town shuttle

To reach AlUla Old Town, use the free parking at Old Town South Parking. From there, a shuttle runs to the Old Town every few minutes, operating daily from 08:00 to midnight. This is a convenient, no-cost way to visit the heritage area without worrying about parking in tight streets.

Private tours and premium transport

For a more curated experience, private tour vehicles with hotel pickup cover transport around AlUla:

  • Up to 2 people: SAR 1,600
  • Up to 4 people: SAR 2,200
  • Up to 6 people: SAR 2,800

Advance booking is required for these services, so reserve early, especially during busy periods.

Booking and planning tips

For attraction transport, shuttle information, tour reservations, schedules, and current prices, use the official Experience AlUla website or app — it's the central channel for everything. Importantly, no special government app procedure applies to ordinary transport within AlUla; you simply book through the official AlUla channel. Plan your route by grouping nearby sites, confirm pickup times with your hotel, and book site tours ahead to avoid disappointment during peak seasons.
