Jeddah Municipality has closed two unauthorized food-production facilities in the Al-Harazat and Al-Qaws districts, east of Jeddah, after inspectors found both sites operating without meeting municipal and health requirements.
During the inspection, teams destroyed 1.5 tonnes of food at one facility and 1 tonne at the other, bringing the total of unfit or unsafe food removed to 2.5 tonnes. Equipment was confiscated and both premises were shut down.
The closures highlight the importance of licensing and food-safety standards for the many residents and families who rely on local food businesses. Operating without proper approvals can put public health at risk, which is why municipal and health requirements are enforced.
How to report and how to comply
Residents can report municipal violations through the Balady application or by calling 940. Food businesses are required to obtain the applicable commercial license through Balady and meet the municipal requirements specific to their activity.
The Balady commercial-license process involves entering the establishment record, selecting the activity and location, submitting the required documents, and paying the calculated fee when applicable. Exact fees vary by activity, location, license type, and the characteristics of the premises, and Balady's fee calculator provides the applicable amount.
A Civil Defense safety permit is issued together with the commercial license for approved activities. Required documents may include a lease, ownership deed or investment contract, building permit, an exterior photograph of the premises, and a safety equipment invoice or Civil Defense safety report.
