Al-Shuaiba Coast: Rising Kitesurfing Spot for Saudis

The Al-Shuaiba coast in Makkah Province is fast becoming a favourite destination for Saudi youth drawn to kitesurfing, with its calm waters and steady winds on the Red Sea. The spot sits about 90 km from Makkah and roughly 75 km from Jeddah, making it an easy day trip for riders from across the region.

The main activity takes place in the sheltered Al-Shuaiba lagoon near Shoaiba Beach, where shallow, protected water offers ideal conditions for both beginners and experienced riders. Operator Super Kite Day runs from the beach at postal area 24934 on Jeddah Highway 55, with daily hours from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.

Public access to the beach is free. For those wanting to try the sport, private lessons are typically around SAR 450, while half-day equipment rental usually ranges from SAR 200 to SAR 350. Board-only rental is generally between SAR 100 and SAR 150. Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult at Super Kite Day.

Safety first for new riders

Beginners are advised to train with qualified instructors and to use proper safety gear, including a helmet, impact vest, a quick-release system, and other appropriate equipment. Learning the basics under supervision helps riders stay safe in the lagoon's open conditions.

For the local community, Al-Shuaiba's rise reflects the growing appetite for outdoor and water sports along the Kingdom's coastline. With free beach access and no identified government fee, permit, or special registration requirement for recreational kitesurfing at the site, the lagoon offers an accessible entry point for residents and visitors looking to get started on the water.
