The Arabian oryx has achieved a historic conservation milestone, with its global status upgraded on the IUCN Red List from “Extinct in the Wild” to “Vulnerable”—a rare success story reflecting decades of recovery efforts, much of it centered in Saudi Arabia.
Across the Kingdom in 2026, an estimated 3,000 or more Arabian oryx now roam freely within protected areas and royal reserves, with breeding and reintroduction programs continuing to push those numbers higher. Recent data point to new wild births recorded in several royal reserves, a strong sign of sustained population growth alongside improved vegetation cover and habitat quality.
Major populations are found at the Mahazat as-Sayd Protected Area, the ‘Uruq Bani Ma’arid Protected Area, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Royal Reserve, Imam Turki bin Abdullah Royal Reserve, Imam Abdulaziz bin Mohammed Royal Reserve, and King Khalid Royal Reserve—all operating as active conservation sites.
The recovery has been driven by a combination of captive breeding at national wildlife research centers, fenced protected areas, controlled reintroductions into the wild, habitat restoration, anti-poaching enforcement, and long-term monitoring. These efforts are led directly by national environmental and wildlife authorities overseeing the Kingdom’s protected areas and royal reserves, and are government-funded.
There are currently no species-specific visitor fees or permit schedules tied to Arabian oryx conservation programs, and no separate published prices or validity periods for oryx viewing distinct from general reserve visitation. For residents and expats, the reclassification is a reminder of the Kingdom’s long-term commitment to restoring native wildlife—and a symbol of how patient conservation can bring a species back from the brink.
