Saudi health authorities confirmed they are still treating a number of heat-stress cases from the recent Hajj season, with some patients remaining under care while free treatment continues to be provided to both authorized and unauthorized pilgrims.
141,000 unauthorized pilgrims received free medical treatment during Hajj, while the health system delivered more than 465,000 specialized treatment services overall. Authorities also confirmed that no diseases or epidemics were recorded throughout the pilgrimage.
The reporting noted that 1,301 pilgrims died as a result of heat stress, with 83% of the deceased being unauthorized pilgrims. In the most recent health update available, the ministry said it treated five heat exhaustion cases during the current season, all of whom were in stable condition.
A sharp drop in heat cases
Health officials pointed to a 90% decrease in heat exhaustion cases during Hajj 1446 AH compared with the previous year, crediting expanded preventive measures. The current Hajj health response involves more than 50,000 medical and technical personnel operating on high alert, alongside cooling measures, hydration guidance, and free emergency care for pilgrims.
For residents and expats across the Kingdom, the figures underline the importance of heat precautions during the summer months. Staying hydrated, avoiding prolonged exposure to the sun, and seeking medical help early remain key steps in preventing heat-related illness, particularly for older individuals and those with chronic conditions.
