Jeddah Boosts Road Safety Around 52 Schools

Jeddah Municipality has completed a package of traffic safety improvements around 52 schools in Jeddah during the month leading up to the 2026/2027 academic year, as part of its back-to-school preparations to protect students and staff.

The works included installing 161 speed bumps, 372 warning and guidance signs, and road markings covering 1,652 square metres on the roads surrounding these schools. The aim is to improve road visibility and regulate vehicle movement near educational facilities, especially during peak arrival and dismissal times.

The traffic safety measures were carried out in coordination with the Jeddah Traffic Department and the Jeddah Education Directorate. In parallel, field teams across 11 sub-municipalities are focusing on cleanliness, removing waste, treating issues on walkways and surrounding areas, and ensuring roads linked to schools are ready.

These steps form part of a wider local plan for the 2026 school year, during which around 700,000 students return to schools in Jeddah, Rabigh, Khulais, and Al-Kamil. The improvements are permanent infrastructure changes intended to remain in place beyond this school year.

Why it matters

For families, safer crossings, clearer signs, and reduced speeds near schools mean lower accident risk during the busy start of term. The works are public projects funded from municipal budgets, with no service fees charged to residents. They also connect to a broader 2026 traffic-solutions program in Jeddah that includes engineering interventions to ease congestion, such as removing the Camel Roundabout and redesigning key intersections to improve safety and traffic flow across the city.
