A new survey of 1,000 Riyadh residents has shed light on the city's growing appetite for fitness, finding that 49% exercise at least twice a week. The results arrive as the capital expands its outdoor sports infrastructure, led by the 135-kilometre linear park known as the Sports Boulevard that connects western and eastern Riyadh.
Walking emerged as the most popular activity at 63%, followed by running at 47% and football at 44%. Around 36% of respondents said they use gyms, while 24% cycle. Despite the activity levels, 76% felt they do not exercise enough, and 46% said they want to work out more often.
When asked what holds them back, 45% pointed to a lack of time, 39% cited unfavourable weather, and 36% named gym-membership costs as a barrier.
More space to stay active
The Sports Boulevard is designed to make movement easier across the city. The project offers walking, running, cycling, and equestrian routes alongside green spaces, cultural venues, and more than 50 sports facilities. Its Athletics Destination stretches four kilometres from Abi Bakr As Siddiq Road to Airport Road, featuring sports facilities, training halls, cycling stations, and dedicated pedestrian and cycling paths.
For residents balancing busy schedules, such open and accessible routes could help address some of the barriers highlighted in the survey, offering free outdoor options that do not depend on gym memberships. As Riyadh continues to grow its sports and recreation offerings, projects like these aim to make an active lifestyle a more natural part of daily life in the capital.
