A Saudi medical team in Riyadh has successfully separated Tanzanian conjoined twins Laityness and Loveness after an operation that lasted 14.5 hours and was completed in nine stages. The twins, two years and two months old, were separated at King Abdullah Specialist Children’s Hospital at King Abdulaziz Medical City, under the Ministry of National Guard.
The twins were joined at the pelvis and hips and shared parts of the lower intestines, the spinal column, the lumbar vertebrae, and the spinal cord, making the procedure highly complex. A team of 44 consultants, specialists, nurses, and technical staff took part in the surgery.
The operation marked the 75th separation carried out under the Saudi Conjoined Twins Programme, and the fourth involving Tanzanian twins since the programme began. The programme provides these surgeries as a humanitarian service, with no fees, application procedures, or validity periods attached.
Why It Matters
For residents and families across the Kingdom, the case highlights the advanced surgical capabilities available in Riyadh and the humanitarian reach of local medical teams. The Saudi Conjoined Twins Programme has become one of the most recognised initiatives of its kind, bringing together large multidisciplinary teams to handle some of the most delicate operations in modern medicine.
The successful separation of Laityness and Loveness adds to a growing record of cases treated in the Kingdom, reflecting continued investment in specialised paediatric and surgical care.
