Saudi health officials are reinforcing the Kingdom's disease surveillance and infection-prevention programs, which track healthcare-associated infections, multidrug-resistant organisms, outbreaks, and communicable diseases on a continuous basis. The programs are managed nationally by the Ministry of Health's General Directorate of Infection Prevention and Control across Saudi Arabia's 20 health regions.
At the heart of the effort is the Health Electronic Surveillance Network (HESN) Plus, the national electronic system used to report communicable diseases, epidemics, immunizations, and healthcare-associated infections. The platform helps health authorities monitor trends and respond quickly when cases emerge.
Hospitals are required to maintain written infection-control policies covering hand hygiene, environmental cleaning, equipment cleaning, standard precautions, and contact isolation. They must also calculate, analyze, and regularly report infection rates to infection-prevention committees and relevant departments. The programs rely on risk assessments, surveillance trends, care bundles, dedicated outbreak teams, laboratory notifications, and corrective actions.
Why it matters
For residents and expats, these measures help keep hospitals and clinics safer and allow authorities to detect and contain outbreaks early. During Hajj 1447 AH/2026, health-surveillance centers at entry points will monitor travelers, carry out screening during alerts or Hajj operations, and refer suspected infectious cases for evaluation and infection-control measures.
No fees, public application steps, validity periods, or Absher or Muqeem procedures are specified for these surveillance and infection-prevention programs, as they are part of the Kingdom's routine public-health and hospital operations.
