Skywatchers across Saudi Arabia will soon look to the southern horizon for one of the year's most anticipated seasonal signs: the dawn appearance of the bright star Suhail (Canopus), long regarded in the Kingdom as the traditional marker of the shift from peak summer heat toward milder autumn conditions.
In the southern regions such as Jazan and the Asir highlands, Suhail is typically first visible around 7 August 2026. Days remain hot at this stage, but nights begin to feel relatively cooler while humidity rises over the mountainous areas. In central Saudi Arabia, the star is observed at dawn around 24 August 2026, a date widely treated as the start of the countdown to the end of extreme heat.
In the northern regions, Suhail's astronomical rising in 2026 begins around 26 August at roughly 05:51 a.m., with the star becoming practical to see with the naked eye during the first third of September as it climbs higher above the southern horizon before sunrise.
A season of gradual change
The Suhail season is described as a transitional period of about 52 days. Daytime temperatures stay warm but decline gradually, while nights moderate as the region moves toward the autumnal equinox around 23 September.
Climate and astronomy specialists in the Kingdom stress that Suhail itself does not physically change the weather. It serves as an astronomical and cultural marker whose rising happens to coincide with natural seasonal shifts tied to Earth's orbit and the changing angle of the Sun's rays.
In southern communities, particularly in Asir, the Suhail period has long been associated with the ripening of seasonal fruits and a move away from the fiercest heat, even though hot days continue during the early part of the season. For residents and expats alike, the star's return offers a welcome, natural signal that the harshest weeks of summer are gradually drawing to a close.
