CMA Approves New Audit Quality Rules for Firms

The Saudi Capital Market Authority approved amendments to the Rules for Registering Auditors of Entities Subject to the Authority's Supervision on 29 September 2026, in a move aimed at strengthening the quality of audits across the entities it oversees. The amendments took effect from the date of publication.

Under the updated rules, registered accounting firms are required to improve the qualifications of their professional staff and to maintain an appropriate quality-management system for audit and review engagements. Firms must also follow professional standards when reviewing interim financial statements and when auditing annual financial statements.

The amendments strengthen oversight by requiring firms to cooperate with the Authority's inspections and to provide requested information, data, and documents. In addition, firms must expand the information included in their transparency reports, covering the firm profile, governance, leadership, quality-management system, responsible personnel, and the results of the firm's annual evaluation.

Why it matters

For investors, listed companies, and the wider business community, clearer audit standards support more reliable financial reporting and greater confidence in the capital market. Stronger quality-management requirements and expanded transparency reporting give stakeholders better visibility into how audit firms operate and how they are evaluated.

The changes apply directly to accounting firms registered to audit entities under the Authority's supervision. The relevant details are available through the Authority's regulatory announcements and rules register.
