Skywatchers across Saudi Arabia are preparing for a rare daytime spectacle on Tuesday, 15 September 2026, when the Moon will pass in front of Venus in a lunar occultation visible over most of the Kingdom. The event was announced on Monday, 14 September 2026, and can be observed from northern regions through the central areas to the south, though exact timings vary by city and observer location.
The general visibility window for Saudi Arabia runs roughly from 12:48 p.m. to 3:13 p.m. Arabia Standard Time (AST). At the Noor Astronomy Observatory in the Qassim Region, near Buraidah, the disappearance and reappearance of Venus behind the Moon is measured more precisely from 1:04 p.m. to 2:38 p.m. AST.
Because the Moon–Venus pair sits about 40 degrees from the Sun at the time of the event, this is a daytime phenomenon. Viewers will need telescopes or binoculars, and strict solar safety precautions are essential — direct unaided-eye viewing of the Sun must always be avoided. The Moon appears as a thin waxing crescent, while Venus is exceptionally bright at magnitude around −4.8, making it detectable in daylight through optical instruments once the Moon is located.
The occultation is part of a wider 2026 pattern of prominent Venus apparitions and alignments, including greatest eastern elongation and conjunctions with the Moon in August 2026, alongside multi-planet sky events promoted for astro-tourism in the Kingdom.
There are no tickets, entry fees, or government e-services required for the public to enjoy this free natural sky event, which can be watched from any safe open area with clear skies. The Noor Astronomy Observatory is referenced only as an observation point and timing reference; no 2026 public entry schedule was published with this announcement. A general guide listing 62 astronomical events between 2026 and 2030 is available through the Saudi Space Agency's official website.
