Domestic Flights in Saudi Arabia: Airlines & Routes

Saudi Arabia is a vast country, and flying is often the fastest and most comfortable way to travel between its major cities. Whether you're commuting for business between Riyadh, Jeddah and Dammam, heading to Madinah for Umrah, or exploring destinations like Abha, Tabuk and Al-Ula, the Kingdom's domestic aviation network is broad, competitive and increasingly affordable. This سعودي ليفنج guide walks you through the main airlines, the busiest routes, the airports you'll use, and the fares you can realistically expect.

The main domestic airlines

Seven airlines currently operate domestic routes within Saudi Arabia, but four cover the vast majority of passengers:

  • Saudia (الخطوط السعودية) – the full-service national carrier with the largest domestic network and the most frequencies on key routes.
  • flynas (طيران ناس) – the leading low-cost carrier, with wide domestic coverage and frequent promotions.
  • flyadeal – an ultra-low-cost airline owned by Saudia, growing quickly across domestic routes.
  • Riyadh Air – the new national carrier, with limited domestic service so far (currently Riyadh–Jeddah).

Between them, they connect major cities with multiple daily flights, while smaller carriers serve regional and less-travelled destinations.

Hubs, airports and route coverage

Domestic flights operate to and from 28 airports across the Kingdom. The three main hubs are Riyadh (RUH), Jeddah (JED) and Dammam (DMM), which offer the widest choice of routes and airlines. Riyadh alone connects to more than two dozen domestic destinations.

Other cities with multiple domestic connections include Madinah, Abha, Tabuk, Jazan, Al Baha, Hail and Najran. Nine airports serve domestic flights exclusively: Al-Baha, Bisha, Gurayat, Sharurah, Wadi Al-Dawasir, Rafha, Turaif, Al Wajh and Dawadmi — useful gateways for reaching smaller towns and regions across the country.

The busiest routes and flight times

The highest-frequency corridors combine business travel with Umrah traffic. The most popular routes are:

  • Riyadh–Jeddah – about 1h10m; served by Saudia, flynas, flyadeal and Riyadh Air.
  • Riyadh–Dammam – about 55m; served by Saudia, flynas and flyadeal.
  • Riyadh–Madinah – about 1h20m; served by Saudia, flynas and flyadeal.
  • Jeddah–Dammam and Jeddah–Madinah – both high-frequency, popular with commuters and pilgrims.

On these core routes you'll usually find several flights throughout the day, which makes last-minute or same-day travel far easier than on regional routes.

What domestic fares typically cost

Fares vary widely depending on demand, how far ahead you book, and whether you choose a full-service or low-cost airline. As a general guide (one-way, economy):

  • Promotional/budget fares on low-cost carriers: roughly SAR 99–209 on selected routes and dates, usually hand luggage only with limited flexibility.
  • Standard economy on popular routes: roughly SAR 200–500, depending on timing and demand.

Realistic recent ranges include: Riyadh–Jeddah budget SAR 199–209 and standard SAR 350–600; Riyadh–Dammam budget SAR 199–250 and standard SAR 300–500; Riyadh–Madinah budget SAR 200–280 and standard SAR 350–550. Remember that checked baggage, seat selection, and change or refund options add to the total — low-cost tickets often exclude checked bags entirely.

Tips for booking domestic flights

  • Book early for the lowest fares, especially around weekends, school holidays and peak Umrah periods.
  • Compare total price, not just the headline fare — add baggage and seat fees before deciding.
  • Travel light to benefit from the cheapest low-cost tickets.
  • Arrive early at busy hubs like Riyadh and Jeddah, where security and check-in queues can be long at peak times.
  • Carry valid ID — a national ID or Iqama for residents, and a passport for visitors.

With frequent departures, competitive pricing and an expanding network, domestic flying remains one of the best ways to make the most of everything the Kingdom has to offer.
