Dhahran is one of the most family-friendly spots in the Eastern Province, known for its quiet residential neighbourhoods, international schools, and easy access to culture and the coast. If you are moving here with children, this guide walks you through the main schooling options, where families spend their free time, and the practical details to plan around. Always confirm the latest fees and timings on the relevant school or venue's official channels, as published figures can change year to year.
Schools and tuition
Dhahran has a strong mix of international and local private schools, so families usually have options across curricula and budgets. Below are published 2026–27 tuition figures to help you compare; registration, transport, and VAT may be additional, so confirm with each school directly.
- American School Dhahran (ASD): Annual tuition before 15% VAT is SAR 57,300 for KG1–2, SAR 80,000 for Grades 1–5, SAR 83,500 for Grades 6–8, and SAR 91,900 for Grades 9–12. Including VAT, totals are SAR 65,895, SAR 92,000, SAR 96,025, and SAR 105,685 respectively.
- British School Dhahran (BSD): Listed annual tuition ranges from SAR 29,975 to SAR 73,200 depending on year group. Confirm registration, transport, and VAT with the school.
- Dhahran Ahliyya Schools: Tuition ranges from SAR 47,500 for kindergarten to SAR 54,000 for Grades 7–11. A one-time SAR 200 library payment is charged and refunded when the student leaves.
Many schools also charge separately for extracurricular activities. Some published activity charges fall in brackets such as SAR 600 plus SAR 300, SAR 700 plus SAR 700, and SAR 1,500 plus SAR 500, so ask for the full activity fee schedule before enrolling.
Ithra: culture for the whole family
The King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture (Ithra) in Gharb Al Dhahran is a highlight for families. It offers galleries, rotating exhibitions, workshops, a dedicated children's museum, a large library, and outdoor installations. Some exhibitions and performances require advance booking through the Ithra booking channel, so check before you go.
Listed opening hours are Monday–Wednesday and Saturday from 9:00 to 24:00, Thursday and Friday from 9:00 to 1:00, and closed on Sunday. Hours can vary by facility or event, so confirm timings for the specific gallery or show you plan to visit.
Parks, playgrounds and outdoor spaces
Dhahran's residential compounds and public spaces offer playgrounds, walking paths, sports facilities, and regular family events throughout the year. Keep in mind that access to compound facilities usually requires resident or guest authorization, so coordinate entry in advance if you are visiting friends.
- Look for walking and cycling areas for evening family time.
- Community sports courts and pitches are common inside compounds.
- Seasonal family events are often hosted in shared green spaces.
Family outings nearby
While Dhahran itself is calm and residential, you are minutes from more entertainment. Half Moon Bay and Al Khobar offer beaches, malls, restaurants, cinemas, and children's entertainment. These are outside Dhahran city, but they are easy day trips and round out weekend plans for families.
Planning tips for new families
- Apply to schools early, as popular grades can have waiting lists.
- Budget for VAT, registration, transport, and activity fees on top of base tuition.
- Confirm compound access rules before planning playdates or events.
- Book Ithra exhibitions and performances ahead of busy weekends.
With its schools, culture, and proximity to the coast, Dhahran gives families a balanced, comfortable base in the Eastern Province. A little advance planning around fees, bookings, and access will make settling in much smoother.
