Saudi Figures Urge Stronger School-Sport Links

Saudi sports figures have called for stronger cooperation among schools, universities, sports organizations and government bodies to better identify and develop young athletes, during a forum held at the University of Business and Technology in Jeddah.

The event, organized in partnership with the Saudi Universities Sports Federation, drew more than 350 participants from the sports, academic, youth and media sectors. Speakers urged closer coordination between the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Sport, arguing that schools and universities should be used more systematically as pipelines for emerging talent.

Participants outlined a set of priorities, including specialized sports programs, qualified academies, university sports medicine, structured talent development, and wider participation by students of all abilities. They noted that existing national initiatives already cover school and university programs, competitions, girls' participation and public physical-activity campaigns, and said these efforts could deliver more if better connected.

Why it matters

For families across the Kingdom, the discussion points to a more organized path for children and students who show athletic promise. A clearer link between classrooms and the sports sector could mean more opportunities to train, compete and access specialized coaching and sports medicine close to home.

The forum reflects a broader push to grow community participation in sport and physical activity, offering residents and expats alike more avenues to stay active and for talented young athletes to be spotted early and supported through their development.
