Getting Around Abha: Transport Options Guide

Abha, the cool highland capital of the Asir region, is a favorite summer escape and a growing tourist destination. Whether you're a new resident or visiting for the mild weather and green mountains, knowing your transport options makes settling in much easier. Unlike larger cities, Abha has no metro or tram, so you'll rely on a mix of taxis, ride-hailing apps, local buses, and intercity coaches. Here's how to get around efficiently and what to expect on fares.

Local public transport in Abha

Road transport across the Kingdom is supervised by the Ministry of Transport and Logistics, and buses and taxis in Abha operate within this framework. There is currently no metro or tram network in the city.

A dedicated urban bus project for the Asir region and Abha was announced, with an ambitious setup that includes 13 routes, 196 stops, 55 buses, and around 150 drivers, operating up to 18 hours a day across roughly 321 km of coverage. The full fare structure has not yet been publicly standardized, so it's best to confirm current fares and routes through the local municipality or transport authority channels once you arrive.

City buses and local routes

Local buses run inside Abha and are handy for short, budget-friendly trips. Typical single-ride cash fares are:

  • Around SAR 3–5 on standard city routes.
  • Around SAR 5–10 for buses from the main station to outlying areas such as Al Jadidah, including routes that serve the New Abha Cable Car.

Buses generally operate most of the day. Detailed route maps and timetables are published through local municipality and transport authority channels rather than national e-government portals, so check those official local sources for the latest schedules.

Taxis in Abha

Conventional street taxis are widely available in central Abha and at Abha International Airport. Fares are metered, and typical costs are:

  • Minimum flag fall around SAR 10–12.
  • Intra-city trips commonly in the SAR 20–40 range depending on distance and traffic.
  • Central Abha to the New Abha Cable Car in Al Jadidah, typically SAR 30–50.
  • Airport taxis from AHB to central Abha, typically SAR 50–70.

Ride-hailing apps

Ride-hailing is a reliable and popular option in Abha. Uber, Careem, and Bolt all currently operate in the city and are available 24/7 in the main urban areas. Fares are dynamically priced through each company's app, and you can pay by card or cash in line with national e-payment policies.

A typical ride from Abha Airport (AHB) to central Abha runs around SAR 50–70, similar to what you'd pay for an airport taxi. For visitors, the apps are especially convenient because you see the fare before confirming and don't need to negotiate.

Airport transfers

Abha International Airport (AHB) sits about 25 km from the city center, with a driving time of roughly 30–40 minutes. Your main options are metered airport taxis or ride-hailing apps, both typically in the SAR 50–70 range. Note that intercity coach services do not depart directly from the airport, so plan a short taxi or app ride to reach a city bus station if you're continuing onward.

Intercity buses to and from Abha

For longer trips, intercity coaches link Abha with other Saudi cities, including daily direct routes between Abha and Riyadh, and Abha and Jeddah. A typical Riyadh–Abha one-way fare is around SAR 160–170, with travel time of about 10–11 hours.

Keep in mind that intercity buses depart from city bus stations in Abha and nearby Khamis Mushait, not from the airport. Booking ahead is wise during peak summer travel season.

Which option suits you?

  • Short daily errands: local city buses for the lowest cost.
  • Convenience and comfort: ride-hailing apps, available around the clock.
  • Airport pickup: metered taxi or app, both similarly priced.
  • Traveling between cities: intercity coaches from the main bus stations.
