King Fahd International Stadium in Riyadh, now known as King Fahd Sports City Stadium, is undergoing a major redevelopment to prepare it for two of the biggest football tournaments heading to Saudi Arabia. The venue remains closed to the public while work continues, and it is not currently hosting events.
Development of the stadium began after its closure on 1 December 2023, with construction officially starting in January 2025. The first phase is focused on readying the ground for the AFC Asian Cup 2027. A planned second phase will bring the venue in line with FIFA requirements for the 2034 FIFA World Cup.
Once complete, the stadium is expected to hold around 70,000 to 70,200 spectators. The project goes well beyond the main pitch: plans include football fields, FIFA training pitches, a football academy, running and cycling tracks, a multi-sport hall, futsal and golf facilities, and a theatre and display space. A sports museum, a sports shop, and additional retail points are also part of the scheme.
Why it matters
The redevelopment is a key part of Riyadh's preparations to welcome major international events over the coming years, offering residents and visitors a wide-ranging sports and leisure destination once it reopens.
Completion is expected in 2026. At this stage, there is no confirmed public reopening date, and no ticket prices, visitor timings, or booking channel have been announced. No admission, tour, parking, or event fees are publicly confirmed, and no special online procedure applies to ordinary stadium attendance. Saudi Living will share further details as they become available.
