Living in Madinah: A Newcomer's Guide

Madinah, in the Madinah Region of western Saudi Arabia about 450 km north of Makkah, is one of the most peaceful and spiritually significant cities in the Kingdom. Whether you are relocating for work, moving closer to Al-Masjid an-Nabawi, or simply exploring a new home base, this سعودي ليفنج guide walks you through the practical essentials of settling in.

Getting In: Visas and Access

Most foreign visitors reach Madinah on an Umrah visa or a tourist e-visa. Umrah visas are now available year-round, and citizens of more than 49 countries can obtain a Saudi tourist e-visa online within minutes through the official visa portal. Note that non-Muslims may enter the city but not the Haram boundary around Al-Masjid an-Nabawi.

The city runs on Arabian Standard Time (UTC+3), and the local currency is the Saudi Riyal (SAR).

Al-Masjid an-Nabawi and the Rawdah

The Prophet's Mosque is open to Muslims 24 hours a day with free entry. Visiting the Rawdah, however, requires planning:

  • Entry needs a free permit booked through the Nusuk app, in timed slots of roughly 10–15 minutes.
  • Each permit is free and linked to your passport; men usually enter via Gate 37 and women via Gate 25.
  • Slots are released weekly and often fill within seconds — many releases happen Friday afternoons (Saudi time) for the following week.
  • Children under 5 are not allowed; each child aged 5+ needs their own permit.
  • Many guides note that each person may book Rawdah access only once every 365 days to manage demand.

Housing and Rents

Furnished studios popular with newcomers commonly cost around SAR 2,200–2,300 per month (about USD 600), often including utilities; unfurnished studios are roughly half that. Furnished two-bedroom apartments typically start from about SAR 4,400–4,500 per month (around USD 1,200).

If you hold a residence permit, you can register your lease through the national Ejar portal, put utilities and a car in your name, and manage your tenancy fully online. Temporary visa holders cannot register on Ejar but can rent short- or long-term furnished apartments directly from landlords or agencies, which is common and straightforward.

Daily Budgets

Costs vary with your lifestyle:

  • Budget: around SAR 180–350 covering a basic hotel, local meals, and limited ride-hailing.
  • Mid-range: around SAR 400–800 including a better-located hotel, restaurant meals, and regular taxis or ride-hailing.

Getting Around and Nearby Sights

Ride-hailing and taxis are widely used. Quba Mosque sits about 3 km from Al-Masjid an-Nabawi — a taxi runs around SAR 15, or about a 25-minute walk if you prefer.

Shopping for Dates and Souvenirs

Madinah is famous for its dates, and two spots stand out:

  • The Old Bazar (Al-Anbariyya) near the Prophet's Mosque sells dates and souvenirs, with date prices often starting around SAR 25 and premium varieties like Medjool and Safawi costing more.
  • The International Dates Market (Souq al-Tamoor) in the central district near the Haram is the largest dates market in the Hejaz, open roughly 8:00–22:00 daily.

As always, confirm any current fees, permit rules, and visa details on the relevant official Saudi government portal before you travel or sign a lease.
