A Perfect Weekend in AlUla: 3-Night Guide 2026

Tucked into an oasis valley in Madinah Province, AlUla (العلا) is northwest Saudi Arabia's most spectacular weekend escape — a landscape of towering sandstone, ancient Nabataean tombs, and palm-shaded date groves roughly halfway between Madinah city and the Jordanian border. A short flight and a well-planned three nights are all you need to see the headline sights without rushing. This is our practical guide to doing it right.

When to go and how long to stay

The comfortable season runs from October to March. Outside these months, daytime temperatures climb and outdoor activities become far less enjoyable, so aim for the cooler window if you can.

Give yourself a minimum of three nights. That lets you dedicate one day to Hegra, one to the Old Town and oasis, and one to the rock formations and desert sunsets — the rhythm most visitors find satisfying.

What it costs

A three-night trip can flex enormously depending on your style:

  • Budget: from around SAR 2,500 total, with daily spend of SAR 400–700.
  • Mid-range: daily spend of SAR 1,200–1,800.
  • Ultra-luxury: SAR 25,000+ total, with daily spend of SAR 3,000+.

Figures cover accommodation, tours, and transport. Confirm current rates when you book.

Getting around

Renting a car at AlUla airport is strongly recommended, as sights are spread across the valley. A 4WD typically runs SAR 180–250 If you prefer not to drive, taxis from town to Hegra cost roughly SAR 80–120 each way.

Day one: Hegra (Madâin Sâlih)

The UNESCO-listed Nabataean tombs are the anchor of any AlUla weekend. A few essentials:

  • Guided entry is mandatory — self-driving inside the site is not allowed.
  • Group bus or buggy tours typically start around SAR 90–100+
  • The popular sunrise slot is around 06:00–06:30; the 06:30 tour lasts 90 minutes and asks you to arrive about 20 minutes early at the Hegra Welcome Centre, roughly 15 km north of town.
  • New tomb clusters open in 2026 via the Hegra Visitor Centre. Book access and permits through the Royal Commission for AlUla digital platforms and app.

Day two: Old Town, Dadan and Jabal Ikmah

Pair the archaeological sites of Dadan and Jabal Ikmah — a valley of ancient inscriptions — as a morning or afternoon block of about four hours. Both are covered by the AlUla welcome card, currently with no separate paid ticket for basic entry.

Save the evening for the restored mud-brick Old Town, the area's dining and strolling hub:

  • Cafés and restaurants generally open from 16:00 daily.
  • Hijazi grills and similar meals average SAR 60–90
  • A guided one-hour Old Town walking tour costs SAR 70
  • The Old Town market (Thursday–Saturday evenings) sells frankincense, dates, and pottery.

Day three: Elephant Rock and desert sunset

Elephant Rock (Jabal AlFil) is best at early morning or sunset for the softest light and cooler air. General access to the rock's viewing area doesn't require a high-priced ticket, but the on-site café is popular on weekends — book ahead for prime sunset slots.

Quick planning tips

  • Reserve Hegra tours and the Elephant Rock café in advance during peak season.
  • Carry water, sunscreen, and layers for cool desert evenings.
  • Always confirm the latest tickets, tour times, and permits on the official Royal Commission for AlUla channels before you travel.
