Saudi Arabia is expanding the technology behind its municipal inspections, with the Ministry of Municipalities and Housing rolling out wider use of smart tools to monitor establishments and public spaces across the Kingdom.
More than 1.6 million inspection tours were carried out during the first quarter of 2026. The visits covered a broad range of areas, including public health, markets, visual pollution, buildings, collective housing, excavations, land encroachments, commercial activities, and contractor classification.
The inspection system relies on a mix of technologies, including Balady Lens, artificial intelligence, geospatial analysis, surveillance cameras in food and health establishments, and approved digital inspection checklists. The ministry says it plans broader technology-enabled monitoring, faster responses to public reports, and increased field coverage.
Body cameras in Riyadh
Riyadh Municipality announced expanded use of body cameras during inspection visits to establishments in the capital. A three-week pilot documented more than 600 visits. The cameras record inspection visits to improve documentation and transparency, and to make it easier to review observations or objections.
For residents and business owners, the move signals tighter and more consistent oversight of shops, restaurants, and construction sites, along with clearer records if a dispute arises over an inspection result. Recorded visits also offer establishments a reference point to confirm how an inspection was conducted.
No new fee, application step, or dedicated digital procedure was announced as part of the technology expansion itself.
