Saudi Arabia Open to 64-Team 2034 World Cup

Saudi Arabia has signaled that it is open to hosting a 64-team edition of the 2034 FIFA World Cup, should football's global governing body decide to expand the tournament. The Kingdom is already confirmed as the host of the 2034 edition.

For now, the official format for 2034 remains set at 48 teams. FIFA has discussed the possibility of moving to 64 teams for that tournament, but no final decision has been taken and no expansion has been approved. Saudi Arabia's position is that it would be ready to accommodate a larger field if such a change is confirmed.

The Kingdom's bid materials describe the 2034 World Cup as the first-ever 48-team tournament to be staged within a single host country. The widely reported hosting plan calls for 15 stadiums spread across five cities.

Why it matters

A move to 64 teams would significantly increase the number of matches, visiting fans, and logistical demands during the tournament. For residents and expats across the Kingdom, that could mean expanded opportunities in hospitality, transport, and events over the coming years as preparations continue.

Any expansion would ultimately depend on a formal decision from FIFA. Until then, the confirmed plan remains a 48-team World Cup hosted by Saudi Arabia across 15 stadiums in five cities.
