Saudi sports figures have called for closer cooperation between families, schools, universities, the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Sport to help identify promising athletes early and develop their talent across the Kingdom.

They urged universities to play a dual role: supporting the development of elite athletes while also encouraging sports participation among students of all abilities, so that physical activity becomes part of everyday campus life rather than a specialty reserved for a few.

Building on existing programs

The appeal builds on a growing list of national efforts. Initiatives such as “My Sport Is My Future,” the expansion of girls’ school sports participation, university sports competitions and nationwide physical-activity campaigns have all widened access to sport in recent years. The Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Sport have backed sports-awareness and participation programs in schools.

Other steps aim directly at talent development. A Saudi sports scholarship program reportedly offers 50 annual grants for promising athletes to study at selected overseas sports universities, while a sports-specialized school has been established in partnership with the Ministry of Sport and Mahd Sports Academy.

At the higher-education level, King Abdulaziz University and Al-Ittihad Club Company signed a partnership covering athlete performance, sports rehabilitation, nutrition, internships, research and professional training — a model that links academic expertise with professional clubs.

For families and students, closer links between classrooms and clubs could mean clearer pathways for young talents, more ways to stay active on campus, and stronger support for those aiming at professional careers. It also reflects the wider push to make sport a lasting part of community life across Saudi Arabia.
