Setting up a new home in Saudi Arabia means arranging your essential utilities, and water is one of the first services you'll need. Whether you've just built a villa, bought an apartment, or are activating an inactive connection, the process is centralized and largely digital. In this guide, سعودي ليفنج walks you through exactly how to request a residential water and wastewater (sewage) connection, the documents you'll need, and what fees to expect.
Who provides water connections?
In Saudi Arabia, the National Water Company (NWC) is the sole provider of new residential water and wastewater (sewage) connections. This means that regardless of your city or neighborhood, all new connection requests and activations go through NWC's official channels. There's no need to shop around — one provider handles the entire process.
Official channels to apply
You have several convenient ways to submit your request, all managed directly by NWC:
- NWC eBranch web portal: Log in to your online account, go to the “Requests” section, and choose “Connection request (water/wastewater).”
- NWC mobile application: The app offers more than 35 water and sanitation services, including new connections, billing, and complaints.
- Unified call center: Call 920001744 for billing and service follow-up, or 8004411110 for application services and inquiries, available 24/7.
Step-by-step: requesting a connection
The process for a residential water or wastewater connection is straightforward once your documents are ready:
- Create or log in to your NWC online account via eBranch or the mobile app.
- Open the requests section and select water connection or wastewater connection.
- Upload the required documents (see below).
- Accept the terms and conditions and submit the request electronically.
If your property already has a connection installed but it is inactive, you can request activation through eBranch by uploading your Completion of Construction certificate and submitting the activation request.
Documents you'll need
Having your paperwork ready in digital form speeds things up considerably. Prepare the following:
- Property deed (required).
- Building permit (required).
- Optional supporting documents: land division document, bank delegation, or a location sketch.
- For activating an existing but inactive connection: the Completion of Construction certificate.
Residential connection fees
Fees are tied to your building's area. Under the current framework, the base rates for smaller residential buildings are clear:
- For residential buildings up to 675 m²: 3,000 SAR for water and 5,000 SAR for sewage.
- For buildings above 675 m², fees increase progressively as the area grows, with higher brackets applying to larger properties.
- For areas exceeding 3,000 m², the actual implementation costs of the connection are applied in addition to the base fees.
- For each additional building unit beyond the base property unit, an extra 1,000 SAR per unit applies to both water and sewage services.
Non-residential and government fees
Commercial, industrial, and government properties follow a different fee structure:
- Non-residential (commercial/industrial): fees start at 15,000 SAR for water and 20,000 SAR for sewage for smaller properties, rising with building area. Implementation costs and application review fees are added for larger or more complex properties.
- Government sector: water connection fees start at 15,000 SAR, and sewage connection fees start at 20,000 SAR.
Tips for a smooth connection
To avoid delays, make sure your property deed and building permit details match the ownership records exactly, and scan all documents clearly before uploading. Keep your request reference number handy so you can track progress through eBranch or by calling the unified numbers. Because fee brackets depend on measured building area, it's worth confirming your exact area figure before you apply. For the latest fee schedule and any updates to the process, always verify the details through NWC's official portal or app before submitting your request.
