Al-Munikh Observatory Reopens as Free Heritage Site

The historic Al-Munikh Observatory Visitor Center has reopened to the public on Mount Munikh, southwest of the old town of Al-Majma'ah in Riyadh Province, offering visitors a close look at centuries-old Najdi architecture and the region's defensive history — with free entry and no ticket required.

At the heart of the site stands a cylindrical watchtower rising roughly 12 to 13 meters, with sloping façades and a nested inner tower. Dated to 820 AH (1417 CE), it originally served as a marqab, or observation post, within a defensive network that protected Al-Majma'ah. Built from local stone and mud and set into the mountain's natural topography, it was used to monitor approaches and signal danger with night fire beacons.

National heritage authorities have restored the complex in recent years, stabilizing the tower and fortified walls, adding stone stairways and lighting, and creating marked visitor paths up the mountain — all while preserving the site's distinctive Najdi features. At the base, the visitor center works as an interpretive hub, presenting the story of Al-Majma'ah, Mount Munikh, and Najdi defensive heritage through museum-style displays and bilingual interactive exhibits.

Hours and access

The visitor center's standard hours for 2026 are Saturday to Thursday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and Friday from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Entry is currently free, and there is no need to book through any national e-platform — visitors can simply walk in during opening hours.

Typical visits include walking the restored paths and stairways up to the tower, taking in panoramic views over Al-Majma'ah and its surrounding farms, and exploring guided explanations and interactive displays on Najdi architecture. Positioned as a year-round cultural destination, the site is at its busiest during the cooler months, roughly November through March, when the outdoor mountain climb is most comfortable.
