The 2026 Arab Optimist Sailing Championship got under way at the Jeddah Sailing Center on South Obhur Beach in Jeddah, bringing together young sailors from 13 Arab countries for five days of competition from 17 to 21 September 2026.
The event, organized by the Saudi Sailing Federation, drew participants aged 8 to 15. Early reports put the number of young sailors at around 90, while later coverage recorded 51 competitors taking part. The competing nations were Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Libya, Morocco, Oman, Qatar, Sudan, Tunisia, and the United Arab Emirates.
How the championship unfolded
The opening day on 17 September was set aside for registration, equipment inspection, and a practice race. On 18 September, sailors competed in the Arab Cup team racing, followed by fleet races across 19, 20, and 21 September. The championship closed on 21 September with an awards ceremony recognizing the top performers.
The Optimist class is one of the most widely used entry points into competitive sailing for children and young teens, making the event an important platform for the region's rising talent. Hosting the championship in Jeddah underlines the city's growing role as a venue for water sports along the Red Sea coast.
For local families and the wider community, the gathering offered a chance to see young athletes from across the Arab world train and compete in one of the region's fastest-growing sporting disciplines, reflecting continued investment in youth sport in the Kingdom.
