Buraidah, the lively capital of the Qassim region, is easier to navigate than many first-time visitors expect. Whether you live here, are moving to the region, or are just passing through on business, you have a growing mix of options: a modern local bus network, intercity coaches, a national railway link, and a regional airport. This Saudi Living guide walks you through each one and how to use it.
Local city buses (Qassim Bus network)
The Qassim Bus urban network, run as part of the SAPTCO city transport service, is the backbone of public transport in and around Buraidah. It operates 12 routes covering roughly 210 stops, serving Buraidah city itself and connecting it with neighbouring Unaizah.
- Fleet of 73 modern buses, each carrying up to 89 passengers and equipped for passengers with special needs.
- Operates daily, 7 days a week, from 5:30 AM to 11:30 PM — around 18 hours of service each day.
- Frequent trips throughout the day make it a practical option for commuting and everyday errands.
How to ride the city bus
Using the network is straightforward once you set up your card in the app:
- Download the dedicated Qassim Bus / SAPTCO urban transport app.
- Issue a transport card directly in the app.
- Choose your route and stop, then board the bus and tap your card.
Exact SAR fares for the Buraidah city buses are not published in official project descriptions, so the price is shown at the point of purchase. You can buy and top up your balance through the app or at bus and agent counters. Always confirm the current fare when you buy.
Intercity buses (SAPTCO)
Buraidah has a SAPTCO intercity bus station linking it with cities across the Kingdom. A popular example is the route between Riyadh Central Bus Station and Buraidah:
- Runs roughly hourly.
- One-way ticket costs about SAR 75–110.
- Journey time is around 5.5 hours.
You can buy tickets at the station's counters or kiosks, or through the SAPTCO online booking system and mobile app. This is a commercial service, so no government login (such as Absher or Muqeem) is needed to book.
Train to and from Buraidah
Buraidah is served by the Qassim Railway Station on the national North–South line, which connects with Riyadh, Al-Majma'ah, Hail, and Al-Jawf. The Riyadh–Al-Qassim sector is especially convenient:
- Journey time about 2 hours 37 minutes — much faster than the bus.
- One-way tickets range from SAR 80–160, depending on class and time.
- Operated 3 times daily.
Book through the national railway website or mobile app, selecting the "Al-Qassim" station, and pay online by card or at the station. No government portal login is required for booking.
Flying to Buraidah
The main airport serving the city is Prince Naif bin Abdulaziz Regional Airport (ELQ), which handles domestic flights connecting Qassim with other parts of the Kingdom. For the latest schedules, routes, and fares, check with the airlines directly.
Choosing the right option
For getting around town and reaching Unaizah, the Qassim Bus network is affordable and reliable. For longer trips to Riyadh, the train is the fastest option, while the intercity bus is a budget-friendly alternative with hourly departures. For destinations further afield, a domestic flight from ELQ saves the most time. Always confirm current fares and timetables on the relevant official service before you travel.
