Getting Around Makkah: Transport Options & Fares

Whether you're living in Makkah or visiting for worship, moving around the city is easier than many newcomers expect. Between a growing public bus network, a dedicated shuttle, app-based taxis, the high-speed train and intercity coaches, you have options for every budget. This Saudi Living guide breaks down the main ways to get around Makkah in 2026, with the fares you can expect and practical tips to save money. Always confirm current prices on the relevant official service before you travel, as fares can change.

The Makkah Bus network

The city bus system is the backbone of affordable travel in Makkah. It has been reported to operate around 400 buses across 12 routes, with roughly 430 stops and 4 main stations in the central area, making it well-suited for daily commuting.

As of early September 2026, the standard fares are:

  • SAR 4 for a single regular journey.
  • SAR 15 for 4 journeys within one day — note this is a 4-trip bundle, not an unlimited day pass.
  • SAR 58 for 16 journeys within one week.

If you commute regularly, the weekly bundle offers the best value For occasional riders, buying single tickets keeps things simple.

The 7A shuttle

The 7A shuttle is a separate service with its own pricing. A one-way ride costs SAR 8. Keep in mind that regular Makkah Bus tickets are not valid on the 7A shuttle — you'll need to pay the shuttle fare separately even if you already hold a bus ticket or bundle.

Taxis and app-based rides

For door-to-door convenience, app-based taxis are widely used across Makkah. Typical reported fares are:

  • Around SAR 15–35 for short hops.
  • Around SAR 25–50 for slightly longer runs across the city.

Prices rise during peak demand, especially around prayer times and busy religious seasons. Booking through an app helps you see the fare upfront and avoid negotiation.

Getting to and from Jeddah Airport

Many travellers arrive at Jeddah Airport before heading to Makkah. You have three main options:

  • Private car / taxi: commonly reported at about SAR 170–260 for a standard car in normal conditions, with higher prices during peak demand.
  • Haramain High-Speed Railway (قطار الحرمين): around SAR 60–70 for economy and SAR 100–150 for business. Note you'll need station transfers at both ends, so factor in extra time.
  • SAPTCO bus (سابتكو): the cheapest reported option at about SAR 20–25, ideal if you're travelling light and watching your budget.

Intercity travel from Makkah

To reach other Saudi cities, SAPTCO coaches are a reliable and economical choice. Reported fares range from about SAR 30–85 depending on your destination. Buses connect Makkah with major cities across the Kingdom, and booking ahead during busy seasons is wise.

Which option is best for you?

  • Daily commuters: the SAR 58 weekly bus bundle offers the lowest cost
  • Budget airport transfers: the SAPTCO bus at SAR 20–25 is the cheapest.
  • Speed and comfort: the Haramain train from Jeddah Airport is fast, but plan for transfers.
  • Convenience: app-based taxis are best for door-to-door trips and late-night travel.

Fares here reflect figures current in early September 2026. Before you travel, confirm the latest prices and schedules on the relevant official service to avoid surprises.
