Jazan Border Guards Foil Drug Smuggling Attempt

Border Guard land patrols in the Al-Ardah (Al-‘Aridah) sector of the Jazan region arrested an Ethiopian national for violating the Border Security Law while attempting to smuggle narcotics into the Kingdom. Patrols seized 65,685 pills subject to medical circulation regulations and 60 kilograms of hashish.

The Border Guard completed the initial legal procedures before handing the violator and the seized narcotics over to the competent security and judicial authorities for further investigation and prosecution.

The confiscated pills are officially classified in Saudi Arabia as regulated, medically controlled tablets, meaning they are prescription-only or controlled substances subject to strict circulation controls and anti-drug laws. The case forms part of ongoing counter-smuggling operations in Jazan targeting the cross-border trafficking of hashish, khat, and regulated tablets.

Why it matters

Authorities have reiterated that drug smuggling and trafficking are major crimes under Saudi law, punishable by long prison sentences, heavy fines, deportation for foreign nationals, and — in severe trafficking cases — capital punishment. Penalties are applied under the Law on Combating Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances and the Law of Border Security Violations. The specific sentence in this case has not yet been publicly reported.

The public is urged to report information on drug smuggling and trafficking through the unified security numbers: 911 for general emergencies in many regions, 999 for police, 994 for the Border Guard, and 995 for the General Directorate of Narcotics Control. These hotlines remain the primary official channels for reporting drug-related crimes.
