Living in Dammam: A Newcomer's Guide

Dammam, the heart of Saudi Arabia's Eastern Province, blends a relaxed coastal lifestyle with a thriving economy, welcoming waterfronts, and a strong sense of community. If you're moving here for work or family, this Saudi Living guide walks you through the essentials — from sorting out your residency paperwork to understanding monthly costs and finding great places to unwind.

Your Residency (Iqama)

Your employer normally handles the issuance and renewal of your Iqama through Muqeem, so most of the process happens through work. Still, it helps to understand the reported costs involved:

  • Annual work-permit levy: reported at SAR 650 for 2026, plus a reported Absher processing fee of around SAR 51.75.
  • Dependent levy: reported at SAR 400
  • Resident ID validity: a reported 2026 change allows the printed Muqeem card to stay valid for up to five years, delivered via Wasil to your registered National Address.

Always confirm the final amount and your card's validity in Absher or Muqeem before paying, as rules can change.

Exit/Re-Entry Visas

Travelling abroad temporarily requires an exit/re-entry visa, which you apply and pay for through Absher or Muqeem:

  • Single visa: reported at SAR 200 covering the first 60 days, with SAR 100 for each additional month.
  • Multiple visa: reported at SAR 500 for 90 days.

Getting Your Driving Licence

Dammam is a spread-out city, so a car makes daily life much easier. To drive legally, complete the process through an approved driving school and Absher. A reported 10-year Saudi driving-licence fee is SAR 400, excluding medical and eye-test charges plus platform fees. Confirm the current requirements and total cost on the relevant official portal.

Cost of Living in Dammam

Dammam is generally more affordable than the largest metros while offering a high quality of life. Here's a reported snapshot of typical monthly costs for a single person:

  • One-bedroom city-centre rental: about SAR 2,000.
  • Utilities (electricity, water, internet): about SAR 680.
  • Groceries: about SAR 1,000.
  • Transport: about SAR 400.

Costs vary by neighbourhood and lifestyle, so treat these as a starting point for your budget.

Things to Do in Dammam

Life here isn't all paperwork — Dammam's waterfront and family attractions are a big part of its charm:

  • Dammam Corniche: The public waterfront areas generally have free entry, making them a favourite for walks, picnics, and sea views.
  • King Abdullah Park: On the Corniche Walkway in Ash Shati Al Gharbi. Reported hours are daily 12:00–00:00, with a reported entry of SAR 20 (dining not included).
  • Amusement areas: Reported to run roughly 15:00–23:00, extending to 00:00 on Thursdays and Fridays. Reported admission starts at SAR 69 depending on the package.
  • Dammam Global City: Reported general admission starts at SAR 23, with a reported family package for five at SAR 100. Reported hours are 16:00–01:00 Sunday–Wednesday and 16:00–02:00 Thursday–Saturday.

Settling In

Give yourself time to find the right neighbourhood, set up utilities, and get familiar with the city's rhythm. Keep the Absher and Muqeem apps handy for everything from residency to travel permits, and always verify fees and hours on the official Saudi government portals before you pay, since services and prices are updated regularly. With its warm community and easygoing coastal pace, Dammam is an easy place to call home.
