New Fines Announced for Damaged License Plates

Motorists in Saudi Arabia now face fines of between SR1,000 and SR2,000 for driving with a license plate that is damaged, unclear, obscured, or does not match the vehicle. The measure aims to keep plates readable for traffic monitoring and enforcement.

Penalties rise sharply for more serious cases. Driving without a rear plate, or without any license plate at all, carries a fine of SR3,000 to SR6,000, along with impoundment of the vehicle until the issue is corrected. Using another vehicle's license plate can lead to a fine of up to SR10,000.

How to replace a damaged or lost plate

Drivers can request a replacement through أبشر Individuals. Log in, open the vehicle services section, and select the license-plate replacement service. After submitting the request, complete any payment and delivery or collection steps that appear on screen. The service covers damaged and lost plates as well as custom-plate requests.

If you believe a violation was issued in error, objections are also handled through أبشر. In general, a violation must be challenged within 30 days of being issued. An active أبشر account is required, and the violation must be registered to the person filing the objection.

Keeping plates clean, secure, and clearly visible is a simple way for residents and expats alike to avoid these fines and any related complications during routine traffic checks.
