Motorists in Saudi Arabia now face a fine of between SAR 1,000 and SAR 2,000 for driving with a vehicle license plate that is damaged, unclear, or obscured,
The violation applies when a plate's details are difficult to read, or when they do not match the information on the vehicle registration card (Istimara). The maximum penalty in these cases is SAR 2,000.
A separate and heavier penalty applies to vehicles driven without a rear plate or without any plates at all. This carries a fine of SAR 3,000 to SAR 6,000, along with impoundment of the vehicle until the issue is corrected.
Why it matters
Clear and readable plates are essential for traffic monitoring, security, and vehicle identification. Ensuring that a plate is intact and matches the registration card helps drivers avoid unexpected fines and complications during routine checks.
Drivers are encouraged to inspect their plates regularly and address any damage or fading before it becomes a violation. Keeping plate details accurate and consistent with the Istimara is a simple step that helps residents and citizens stay compliant on the road.
