Motorists in Saudi Arabia now face an administrative traffic fine of between SR3,000 and SR6,000 for taking part in illegal car races or convoys on public roads without a permit. The fine level was highlighted publicly in September 2026 as part of stepped-up enforcement across several cities.
The violation is recorded by the General Department of Traffic and is treated as a distinct traffic offense, separate from the provisions covering drifting and other stunt driving in the Traffic Law. There is no special application channel for the fine itself; the offense is detected and issued by traffic patrols and by field and undercover teams assigned in multiple cities to monitor unauthorized races and convoys.
Payment and inquiry for the fine are handled through the usual government e-services for traffic violations, alongside bank channels. The violation appears under the vehicle or ID record and can be paid electronically.
How it fits with existing penalties
The SR3,000 to SR6,000 fine is in addition to any other penalties that may apply in the same incident, including those for dangerous driving, speeding, or drifting. Separate and harsher penalties for car drifting and stunt driving remain in force. First-offense drifting carries fines of around SR20,000, vehicle impoundment for 15 days, and possible court-referred jail sentences, rising to SR40,000 and SR60,000 for repeat offenses with longer impoundment and potential confiscation of the vehicle.
The move continues a series of 2025–2026 traffic law and enforcement updates that classify street-race-like stunts and dangerous racing as punishable offenses, with vehicle impoundment periods and escalating fines for repeat offenders. For residents and expats, the message is clear: organized or informal races and convoys on public roads without a permit now carry a specific, clearly defined penalty.
