Opening a bank account is one of the first practical steps every new resident in Saudi Arabia needs to take — from receiving your salary to paying rent, utilities, and everyday purchases. The good news is that the process has become far more streamlined in recent years, and many banks now let eligible residents open an account entirely online. In this Saudi Living guide, we walk you through who can open an account, what documents you'll need, and the exact steps for both in-branch and digital account opening.
Who Can Open a Bank Account?
The key requirement for most expats is a valid Iqama (residence permit) and actual residence in the Kingdom. If you hold a valid Iqama, you can open a personal current account like any other resident.
- Iqama holders: Eligible to open a standard personal current account.
- Non-resident foreigners: Opening an account generally requires prior approval from the Saudi central bank (SAMA) and is limited to specific categories, such as foreign investors.
- GCC citizens: Treated under separate rules.
If you're still waiting for your Iqama to be issued, it's best to hold off — most banks will not process a personal current account without it.
Documents You'll Need
At a minimum, banks are required to collect the following from Iqama-holder expats:
- A copy of your Iqama
- A copy of your passport
- Your Saudi address and your home-country address
- A specimen signature and a completed account-opening form
Many banks also ask for additional documents, so it's wise to prepare them in advance:
- An employment letter, salary certificate, or NOC from your employer or sponsor confirming your job and salary
- A Saudi mobile number registered under your Iqama, which is essential for receiving one-time passwords (OTPs)
- Your National Address registered with Saudi Post (SPL)
Opening an Account Online
Several major banks now allow resident expats to open a basic current account without ever visiting a branch. The typical flow looks like this:
- Start the "e-account" or "digital account opening" process on the bank's app or portal.
- Enter your Iqama number and confirm your National Address.
- Approve your identity digitally through your أبشر account and ناجز… authentication (see the next section).
- Confirm your Saudi mobile number via an SMS OTP.
- Accept the terms and conditions — your IBAN is usually issued instantly.
- Collect your debit card in a branch or have it delivered to your National Address.
To use the online route smoothly, make sure your أبشر account is active and your mobile number and National Address are up to date before you begin.
Digital Identity Verification
Identity verification is central to account opening in the Kingdom, and it relies on the national digital systems:
- أبشر: An active account is required or strongly recommended for most online and e-account processes.
- نفاذ: Used for real-time identity authentication, linked to your أبشر account.
- Biometrics: For in-person openings, banks may use a fingerprint scan or app-based approval at branch terminals.
Opening an Account In-Branch
If you prefer visiting a branch, or if your situation requires it, the typical steps are:
- Bring your original Iqama and passport to your chosen bank branch.
- Provide your Saudi mobile number and National Address details.
- Submit your employment letter or NOC if the bank requests it.
- Fill in and sign the account-opening form along with the anti-money-laundering (AML) and know-your-customer (KYC) declarations.
- Complete biometric or نفاذ digital verification.
- Receive your account number and IBAN, with the debit card issued after activation.
Tips for a Smooth Experience
- Register your National Address with Saudi Post before applying — many delays trace back to a missing or outdated address.
- Make sure your mobile number is registered under your Iqama, otherwise you won't receive OTPs.
- Keep digital and physical copies of all documents ready.
- Confirm the exact fees, minimum balance requirements, and card details directly with the bank, as these vary and change over time.
Because requirements and fees can differ between banks and may be updated, always verify the current details on the relevant official portal — such as أبشر — or directly with your chosen bank before starting.
