Opening a Bank Account in Saudi Arabia as an Expat

Opening a bank account is one of the first practical steps for anyone building a life in Saudi Arabia. You need it to receive your salary, pay rent, settle utility bills, and use everyday digital services. The good news is that the process has become fast and largely paperless, thanks to national digital identity tools. In this Saudi Living guide, we walk you through exactly what you need, how the online flow works, and what to do if you prefer visiting a branch in person.

Who Can Open an Account

If you are a resident holding a valid Iqama (residence permit), you can open a standard personal current account for salary and day-to-day use. A few basic conditions apply:

  • You must have an active Iqama that has not expired.
  • You are typically required to be 18 years or older.
  • You need to be inside Saudi Arabia, because biometric verification and mobile number validation must be done locally.

Documents and Details You Need

Before you start, make sure you have the following ready. Having everything on hand makes the process much smoother:

  • Your valid Iqama.
  • Your passport.
  • A Saudi mobile number registered under your own ID.
  • A National Address registered with Saudi Post.
  • Your employer details and income or salary information.
  • Your home-country address and the purpose of the account (usually personal use or salary transfer).

Your National Address matters because banks pull that data automatically, so it should be registered and up to date before you apply.

Opening an Account Online

Most major banks — including Al Rajhi, SNB, Riyad, SAB, and Alinma — let you open an account entirely through their mobile app or website. The digital flow relies on أبشر for your underlying identity and نفاذ for biometric verification. In practice, the steps look like this:

  • Open the bank's app or website and select "Open New Account" or a similar option.
  • Enter your Iqama number and mobile number, accept the terms, and confirm the OTP sent to your phone.
  • You are redirected to نفاذ, where you approve the request and complete biometric verification using face ID or fingerprints.
  • The system retrieves your personal data from أبشر and your address from Saudi Post. Review the details, update anything needed, and add your employment information.
  • Submit the application. Your IBAN and account number are usually issued immediately or within one to three business days.
  • Your Mada debit card is printed at a self-service kiosk or delivered by courier within a few days.

Because نفاذ depends on أبشر credentials, most banks require you to be registered on أبشر before you begin. During the flow you confirm your identity with your أبشر login and OTP, then match a short code in the نفاذ app and complete face or fingerprint verification.

Opening an Account at a Branch

If you prefer face-to-face service, you can still open your account at a branch. Bring the following:

  • Your Iqama and passport.
  • An employer letter or salary certificate.
  • Proof of address, such as a tenancy contract or a utility bill.

A staff member will complete a paper or electronic application, confirm your identity, and create the account. Your IBAN is issued, and your Mada card is either produced at the branch or mailed to you.

How Long It Takes

Online accounts are often activated instantly or within 24 hours, while a fully verified account may take up to one to three business days depending on the bank. The physical Mada card typically arrives within a few days of the account being created.

Tips for a Smooth Application

  • Register on أبشر and set up نفاذ before you start, so verification does not stall.
  • Make sure your National Address with Saudi Post is complete and accurate.
  • Ensure your Saudi mobile number is registered under your own ID, not someone else's.
  • Keep your Iqama valid and unexpired throughout the process.

Fees, minimum balance requirements, and specific product features vary between banks, so always confirm the current terms directly with your chosen bank and on the relevant official Saudi government portals such as أبشر before you apply.
