Perched high in the mountains of the Makkah region, Taif is Saudi Arabia's cool-weather escape — a city of rose gardens, misty peaks and easygoing family fun. Whether you're a resident planning a weekend break or an expat exploring the Kingdom for the first time, Taif packs an impressive range of things to do into a compact, walkable area. Here's Saudi Living's practical guide to the very best of it.
Ride the Al Hada Cable Car
The Al Hada cable car (Teleferik) is Taif's signature experience. It descends from the Al Hada mountains down to Al Kar Tourist Village in the valley below, with sweeping views the whole way. Tickets are sold on-site at the station — there's no online or app booking needed.
- Adults: roughly SAR 80–150 one way, or about SAR 100–300 for a round trip.
- Children: generally SAR 50–60, and children under about 5 often ride free.
- At Al Kar, don't miss the toboggan ride, around SAR 30–50
- Usual hours are about 09:00–20:00 daily, though this varies by season, so arrive earlier on busy weekends.
Relax at Arruddaf Park
In the Al Rudaf district, this popular city park is a favourite for family evenings. Entry is completely free, and so are the fountain and light shows that come alive after dark. There's no booking — just show up. Most families arrive after 16:00 and stay well into the night, so it's an easy, low-cost outing that works for all ages.
Explore Saiysad National Park
For a more natural setting, head to Saiysad National Park in eastern Taif. Entry is free and access is straightforward by car, with no permits required. It's best known for picnic spots, easy hiking trails, and lovely views of the valley and dam. Bring your own food, water and shade, as facilities are basic — it's more about the outdoors than amenities.
Visit Taif Zoo
Taif Zoo, near the city centre, is a solid pick for families with young kids. Entry is around SAR 15–20 with a range of animals to see. Extra rides and small attractions inside are paid separately with small tickets bought at the gate. The zoo generally opens from the afternoon into the late evening, and is busiest on weekends.
See Shubra Palace
This elegant historic palace in central Taif's Shubra district is one of the city's architectural landmarks. It has been undergoing restoration, so interior and museum access may be limited. For now, plan on a short exterior photo stop to admire the facade rather than a full museum visit. When it's open for visits, entry is typically free — worth checking locally before you go.
Tour the Rose Farms and Distilleries
Taif is famous across the Kingdom for its roses, and the farms and distilleries around Al Shafa and the surrounding countryside are a must during rose season. You can usually walk in for free to watch the distillation process.
- Rose water and rose oils are sold on-site, starting from around SAR 50 and up.
- The Al Shafa mountains offer cool air and scenic drives even outside peak season.
- Buying directly from the farm is a great way to take home an authentic Taifi souvenir.
Tips for Your Visit
Taif's higher elevation means cooler, sometimes breezy weather, so pack a light layer even in warmer months. Weekends and holidays get busy at the cable car and parks, so start early. Prices listed here are typical ranges — always confirm current rates on-site, as they can change seasonally.
