Saudi Arabia is preparing a major expansion of its hospitality sector, with plans to add around 250,000 new hotel rooms by 2030. The move would raise the Kingdom's total hotel capacity to roughly 550,000 rooms, close to double current levels.
The country currently has around 280,000 hotel rooms, meaning the target represents a near-doubling of available inventory within the decade. The expansion has been tied directly to the tourism objectives under Vision 2030, which aim to make the sector a central pillar of the national economy.
Among those objectives is lifting tourism's contribution to national GDP to around 10 percent by 2030, up from roughly 5 percent at present. The Kingdom is also targeting around 150 million annual domestic and international visitors by the same year.
Why it matters
Hotel-room capacity has been identified as one of the main requirements for meeting these visitor targets, and the added supply is intended to support major upcoming events, including Expo 2030 and the 2034 FIFA World Cup. Recent statements indicate the additional rooms could be delivered over the next five to seven years to align with these hosting commitments.
For residents and expats, the planned growth points to a wider choice of accommodation across major destinations, alongside continued investment in tourism infrastructure worth hundreds of billions of dollars. The 550,000-room figure is also being framed as a baseline, with some plans pointing to further growth toward 600,000 to 650,000 rooms in the years that follow.
