Saudi women's participation in the Riyadh Marathon climbed to 25.8 percent in 2026, a notable rise from 18.7 percent recorded in 2022. The event was held in the capital from 28 to 31 January 2026 at Princess Nourah bint Abdulrahman University.

The marathon drew more than 50,000 runners representing 134 nationalities, making it one of the largest community running events in the region. All race categories for the 2026 edition were sold out, while the accompanying public Riyadh Marathon Festival offered free entry to visitors.

Why it matters

The steady growth in women's participation over four years reflects a broader shift toward active, community-driven sport in Saudi Arabia. The increase from 18.7 percent to 25.8 percent signals rising interest among Saudi women in endurance running and large-scale public fitness events.

The scale of the event, with tens of thousands of runners from across the world gathering in Riyadh, highlights the city's growing position as a destination for international sporting gatherings. The free public festival also widened access for families and residents who wished to take part in the atmosphere without registering to race.

For residents and expats in Riyadh, the marathon continues to offer a shared community occasion that brings together participants of different backgrounds and nationalities. With all categories sold out, demand for future editions is expected to remain strong.
