Drivers in Saudi Arabia can now bid on special vehicle license plates entirely online, with electronic plate auctions conducted exclusively through the أبشر Individuals platform. The service lets eligible vehicle owners compete for distinctive plate combinations from anywhere, using the web portal or the mobile app.
Three plate categories are covered by the auctions: Private (خصوصي), Private Transport (نقل خاص), and Motorcycle (دراجة آلية). To take part, users need an active أبشر individual account with a verified digital ID. Applicants must be Saudi residents or legally registered users holding a valid national ID or iqama, and must have no outstanding traffic violations or unpaid fees to complete a plate transfer.
How the auction works
After logging in to أبشر (Individuals), users go to "My Services," select "Traffic" (المرور), then choose the Electronic Plate Auction (مزاد اللوحات الإلكتروني). The system displays the active auctions and available plate combinations for each type. Bidders select a plate and enter an amount higher than the current minimum, then confirm the bid electronically and receive a registration confirmation.
Bids can be placed until the auction closing time, and the highest valid bid at closing wins. If bids arrive in the final moments, the auction may be automatically extended for a short period. Auctions run within defined windows announced through أبشر and official traffic channels, commonly starting in the morning of one day and closing in the evening of the next. New auction sessions are held periodically with fresh groups of plates.
Participation requires paying a refundable auction deposit through أبشر before bidding. The deposit is refunded automatically to non-winning bidders and applied toward the purchase price for the winner. Winning bids must be paid within five days of winning; otherwise the award may be cancelled and the plate re-offered. The fully digital process spares residents a trip to traffic offices and gives everyone equal, transparent access to sought-after plates.
