Businesses registered for Value Added Tax (VAT) in Saudi Arabia are being reminded that filing a tax return late can trigger a penalty ranging from 5% to 25% of the VAT that should have been declared. The fine is not a fixed Saudi Riyal amount; it is calculated based on the tax due for the relevant period.
VAT returns must be submitted, and any tax owed paid, by the last day of the month following the tax period. Missing the deadline for payment carries a separate penalty of 5% of the unpaid VAT for each month, or part of a month, that the amount remains outstanding.
Penalties can climb higher for repeat offenders. If a violation is repeated within three years, the applicable penalty may be doubled — a significant consideration for small and medium enterprises managing tight cash flow.
How to file and pay
Returns and payments can be completed through the ZATCA online portal or the official ZATCA smartphone application. Taxpayers who need help can reach support around the clock, 24 hours a day and 7 days a week, by calling 19993.
Why it matters: timely filing protects businesses from avoidable fines that accumulate month after month. A 2026 penalty-waiver initiative offers relief on eligible late-filing, late-payment, late-registration, and certain VAT correction penalties. To qualify, a taxpayer must be registered and submit any outstanding returns. The initiative does not cover penalties for tax evasion, penalties already paid before the initiative took effect, or returns due after 30 June 2025.
Saudi Living advises VAT-registered businesses to review their filing calendar now, clear any overdue returns, and keep records up to date to benefit from available relief and avoid escalating fines.
