Cultural Cafés Rise as New Social Spaces in Saudi Cities

A wave of specialized cultural cafés is reshaping social life in Saudi cities, offering residents and visitors new “third spaces” to socialize, study, and work. These venues blend the traditional rituals of Saudi gahwa with modern specialty coffee, appealing to a growing café culture across Jeddah and Riyadh.

Many heritage-themed cafés occupy restored historic buildings in districts such as Al Balad (Historic Jeddah) and Diriyah in Riyadh, weaving Najdi and Hijazi architectural details into their design. In Al Balad, spots like Historic Nights Rooftop Cafe, Beit Ziryab, and Minaa operate in or near restored heritage houses, with drinks typically priced at SAR 15–30 and hours running from 7:00 until around midnight, extending to about 1:00 on weekend nights.

Beyond heritage quarters, specialty cafés have become creative and professional hubs. In Jeddah's Al Rawdah and Tahlia area, venues such as Brew92, Meraki Artisan, and Atelier La Vie serve modern specialty coffee at around SAR 20–40, often staying open past midnight. In the Al Zahra and An Nahdah districts, Caffeine Lab and Camel Step focus on craft brewing and minimalist design, with prices around SAR 18–35.

In Riyadh, a dense café network stretches from the historic Dira area to the northern boulevards, with names including Elixir Bunn, Camel Step, and Half Million. Pour-over prices sit around SAR 18–35, and many cafés remain busy late into the night, around 23:00.

Premium heritage dining at Bujairi Terrace

At Diriyah's Bujairi Terrace, premium cafés and bakeries such as Angelina, Cova, and Sarabeth's operate within a heritage setting, with a typical spend of SAR 50–150 Entry is free before 17:00 and for children under 12 at all times, while a SAR 50 fee applies per person after 17:00 — fully redeemable as same-day dining credit. An evening visit including entry, parking, and dining usually costs around SAR 200–400
