First Multi-Operator Indoor 5G Launches at KAUST

Saudi Arabia has launched its first live multi-operator shared indoor network powered by Cloud RAN, deployed at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) in Jeddah on 3 September 2026. The project marks a technical milestone for in-building connectivity in the Kingdom.

The deployment relies on a Neutral Host model, which allows several telecom operators to share the same indoor infrastructure rather than each building separate networks. This approach is designed to improve coverage while reducing duplicated equipment inside large facilities.

As part of the rollout, the project completed core-network integration with one telecom provider and successfully placed the first 5G NR and VoLTE voice call over the shared network. These steps confirm that both data and voice services can run smoothly on the new setup.

The network is built to support 5G Standalone, edge computing, and AI-powered applications. Together, these capabilities point to faster, lower-latency connections that can serve advanced digital services on campus.

Why it matters

For residents, students, and businesses in Jeddah, shared indoor networks can mean more reliable coverage in large venues without the clutter of multiple competing installations. The model could serve as a reference for future indoor 5G deployments across the Kingdom as demand for high-speed, in-building connectivity continues to grow.
