Jeddah is a sprawling coastal city, and knowing your transport options makes daily life far easier — whether you're commuting to work, heading to the Corniche, or catching a flight. Over the past couple of years the city's public transport has expanded significantly, giving residents affordable, structured alternatives alongside the familiar ride-hailing apps and taxis. Here's Saudi Living's practical breakdown of how to get around Jeddah.
City Public Buses (JeddahTransport Company)
The city bus network is operated by Jeddah Transport Company (JTC), the executive arm of Jeddah Municipality for public transport. As of the phase launched on 1 April 2025, the network covers roughly 14 routes and more than 380 stops across the city, running from early morning to late evening with higher frequency on central corridors.
- Flat fare: SAR 3.45 per trip (including VAT).
- Daily package: SAR 10 for 5 rides.
- Weekly package: SAR 60 for 35 rides.
- Monthly package: SAR 240 for 175 rides.
Payment is via a contactless smart card or e-ticket, validated when you board. If you use the bus regularly, the monthly package offers clear savings over paying
Other Bus Services Within Jeddah
Alongside JTC routes, some conventional city bus lines operate under the national transport framework. Fares here vary with distance:
- Around SAR 3–5 on central internal routes.
- Around SAR 5–8 on longer internal routes.
- Around SAR 10–15 to newer peripheral areas.
Some of these networks also offer a day ticket at around SAR 15 with unlimited or capped rides for that day — handy if you plan several trips in one day.
Ride-Hailing Apps
Licensed ride-hailing platforms operate widely across Jeddah and are the go-to choice for door-to-door convenience. Typical pricing inside the city:
- Base fare: around SAR 5–7
- Per kilometre: generally SAR 1–2 for standard cars, more for premium categories.
Fares rise during peak demand, so booking a little earlier can help. You can pay by cash, bank card, or in-app, and each trip generates an e-receipt that's useful for expense documentation.
Getting To and From the Airport
Trips between King Abdulaziz International Airport and central Jeddah usually cost between SAR 40 and SAR 80, depending on traffic, time of day, and the service category you choose. Street taxis and franchise limousines also operate from the airport, Corniche, and major malls, running metered fares loosely in line with ride-hailing bands for city trips.
Taxis and Limousines
Metered street taxis remain a straightforward option from major hubs. For short city trips, expect fares broadly similar to standard ride-hailing rates. Confirm the meter is running before you set off, and keep small cash on hand in case a card reader isn't available.
Useful Official Platforms
For anything related to regulated transport services, driver permits, and personal transport services, the relevant Saudi digital platforms are worth bookmarking:
- توكلنا (Tawakkalna) — identity and health status.
- أبشر (Absher) — transport-related personal services for residents and citizens.
- مقيم (Muqeem) — residency-related services.
Fares and packages can change, so always confirm current prices and route details through official channels before relying on them for a specific trip.
