Getting Around Taif: Transport Options Guide

Taif sits in the mountains of the Makkah region and draws visitors year-round with its cool weather, gardens, and scenic highlands. Whether you live here or you're visiting for the season, knowing your transport options makes the city far easier to explore. Below is Saudi Living's practical rundown of how to get around Taif — from the city bus network to taxis, ride-hailing, car rental, and intercity travel.

City buses in Taif

Taif has a modern public bus system launched in 2022 as part of wider efforts to improve mobility and reduce congestion. It was designed as a fixed-city network rather than a metro-style system, and it remains in operation.

  • A fleet of 58 buses serving the city.
  • 9 main routes covering the city's key areas.
  • Around 184 stops across roughly 293 km of route distance.
  • Service runs 7 days a week, from 5:30 am to 11:30 pm.

Fares for the city buses were not available as a confirmed figure at the time of writing, so check the current ticket price and payment method before you ride.

Taxis and ride-hailing

Taxis are widely used for local trips around Taif, and ride-hailing apps such as Uber and Careem also operate in the city. Apps are often the easier choice because you see the route and estimated cost before confirming, and you can pay in-app.

Meter tariffs for street taxis and app pricing vary from trip to trip and change with demand, distance, and time of day, so treat any quote as an estimate and confirm before you set off.

Car rental and driving

Renting a car is one of the most practical ways to experience Taif, especially if you plan to head into the highlands. You can pick up a rental at Taif airport or from agencies in the city.

  • Ideal for reaching Al Hada, Al Shafa, and other mountain areas that are harder to cover by bus.
  • Gives you flexibility for day trips, scenic drives, and visits to farms and viewpoints.
  • Mountain roads can be winding, so drive cautiously and allow extra time.

Airport transfers

Taif airport sits outside the city, so most travelers reach it by taxi or ride-hailing. Because it's a distance from the center, pre-booked transfers are a popular option for a smoother arrival or departure.

  • Book a transfer or app ride in advance if you have an early or late flight.
  • Confirm the pickup point and estimated travel time before your trip.

Intercity travel

Taif is well connected to the rest of the Kingdom by bus. SAPTCO operates intercity services linking Taif with major Saudi cities, which is a comfortable and budget-friendly option for longer journeys.

What Taif does not have

There is currently no metro or tram in Taif. The public bus network is the main mass-transit option within the city, complemented by taxis, ride-hailing, and rental cars for everything else.

For up-to-date fares, timings, and route details, always confirm through the relevant official Saudi service or operator before you travel.
