Heat-Related Cases Among Pilgrims Drop 90% in 2025

Health authorities in the Kingdom have reported a sharp decline in heat-related illnesses among pilgrims and residents, with data for the Hajj seasons showing a 90% drop in heat exhaustion and heat stroke cases in 2025 compared to 2024. Low levels continued into 2026, with no major heat-related public-health threat recorded during the latest Hajj.

The improvement follows a package of preventive measures rolled out across Makkah and the holy sites. These include the expansion of shaded pedestrian pathways, the installation of around 400 additional water coolers and misting fans, and the planting of more than 10,000 trees in coordination with the Royal Commission for Makkah City and Holy Sites to lower ambient temperatures.

Free cooling supplies such as water and umbrellas were distributed to pilgrims at major locations, while more than 50,000 medical and technical personnel were deployed during the seasons. Dedicated heat stress and heat stroke centers were operated in hospitals at Makkah and the holy sites, equipped with rapid-cooling and intensive-care units. Water mist sprays and air-conditioned transport, including metro lines, helped reduce exposure during large crowd movements, alongside continuous epidemiological surveillance.

Guidance for residents and pilgrims

For the wider community, health officials advise wearing lightweight, light-colored clothing, staying in cool places, and scheduling outdoor activities during cooler hours. Residents are urged to drink fluids regularly rather than only when thirsty, avoid sugary drinks and heavy hot meals, apply sunscreen, and use wide-brimmed hats, sunglasses, and umbrellas when outdoors.

Children should never be left in parked cars, and high-risk groups should be monitored for early signs of heat illness. Anyone showing symptoms of heat exhaustion or heat stroke is advised to seek immediate care at the nearest hospital or mobile clinic. Awareness content and real-time advisories are published through official health channels under the summer heat and health awareness sections.
