Heavy Rain, Hail, Flash Floods Hit Southern Regions

Forecasters expect moderate to heavy thunderstorms accompanied by hail and a risk of flash floods to continue across parts of southern and southwestern Saudi Arabia on Sunday, 13 September 2026. The affected areas include Jazan, Asir, Al-Baha, and the highlands of the Makkah and Madinah regions.

heavy rainfall is classified as 10 to 50 millimetres Such storms may bring downdraft winds of 60 km/h or higher, flash floods, hail, rising coastal waves, and, in some cases, tornado-like funnels or waterspouts.

Red and orange alerts are in force for parts of Jazan, Asir, Al-Baha, and the highlands of the Makkah region during early to mid September. The unstable conditions are expected to persist from Saturday through Monday across Madinah, Jazan, Asir, Al-Baha, and parts of the western and southwestern highlands.

Civil Defense advisories urge residents to avoid valleys, ravines, and flood-prone areas, and warn against attempting to cross flowing wadis or staying in places where water accumulates during periods of heavy rain and flash flood alerts.

For residents and expatriates in the affected regions, the guidance matters most in areas where sudden downpours can turn dry wadis into fast-moving streams within minutes. Warnings continue to be issued mainly through meteorological bulletins and Civil Defense alerts. Similar conditions were also forecast earlier in 2026, in March and April, across broad areas of the Kingdom including Riyadh, Makkah, Madinah, Qassim, Hail, the Eastern Province, and the northern regions.
