Jazan Crop Diversity Boosts Saudi Food Security

Jazan has emerged as one of the Kingdom's most productive agricultural regions, with a wide variety of crops supporting national food-security goals under Saudi Vision 2030.

The region is best known for its tropical fruit. Around 1 million mango trees produce an estimated 65,000 tonnes a year, while roughly 800,000 papaya trees yield more than 40,000 tonnes annually. More than 1 million banana trees add about 15,000 tonnes each year. Fig farming is also significant, spanning 346 farms with over 480,000 trees that produce around 9,600 tonnes annually.

Beyond these headline crops, Jazan cultivates guava and custard apple, along with a range of vegetables including tomatoes, cucumbers, eggplants, zucchini, okra, peppers, and leafy greens. Field crops play a major role too: sorghum covers more than 60,000 hectares and produces over 55,000 tonnes a year, while sesame spans more than 6,400 hectares with output exceeding 6,422 tonnes annually.

Why it matters

Modern infrastructure is helping the region make the most of its harvests. Sorting facilities, cold storage, logistics networks, greenhouses, drip irrigation, and post-harvest systems all work to reduce losses and improve water efficiency — a key concern in a country focused on sustainable resource use.

Sustainable Rural Agricultural Development initiatives have also tested improved varieties of sorghum, pearl millet, and sesame in Jazan and Asir, aiming to raise yields and resilience. Together, these efforts strengthen local food production and reduce reliance on imports, bringing fresh, locally grown produce closer to consumers across the Kingdom.
