KAUST Scientists Train Corals to Resist Disease

Researchers in Saudi Arabia have reported a first-of-its-kind way to help corals fight disease: exposing them to a controlled, non-lethal dose of a harmful pathogen so they become more resistant to later infection. The findings were published in 2026, and the team filed a patent application for the method.

In the study, corals were given chronic exposure to live or inactivated Vibrio coralliilyticus, a bacterium associated with coral disease. The primed corals showed improved resistance, less bleaching, and better photosynthetic performance compared with untreated corals, especially when placed under heat stress.

Scientists linked the protective effect to two factors: conditioning of the coral's microbiome and changes in the host's gene expression. Together, these produced a memory-like, immune-training response — remarkable because corals lack the vertebrate-style adaptive immune system found in animals like humans.

Why it matters

Coral reefs are among the most valuable and vulnerable ecosystems, and rising sea temperatures make them prone to bleaching and disease. For communities along the Red Sea coast, healthy reefs support marine life, fisheries, tourism, and diving activities. A practical priming technique could give conservation efforts a new tool to protect reefs as ocean conditions grow more challenging.

The work described this as the first evidence of a protective, memory-like response in corals, opening the door to future methods that strengthen reef resilience. The patent application covers pathogen priming as a coral disease-resistance approach.
