Researchers working in the central Saudi Red Sea have reported encouraging results on how beneficial bacteria may help corals withstand rising sea temperatures. During a natural marine heatwave, they tested treatments on Acropora corals to see whether specific bacteria could improve heat tolerance.
The team applied both live beneficial bacteria and heat-inactivated bacterial treatments over a period of about 15 days, while seawater temperatures ranged from roughly 30.9°C to 31.9°C. The live treatments helped corals maintain their photosynthetic efficiency, and one heat-inactivated treatment did the same. In contrast, untreated corals showed a significant decline.
Treated corals also displayed better pigmentation and stronger photosynthetic performance. The researchers found that the treatments increased the presence of bacteria linked to heat tolerance, including a group known as Cobetia.
Why it matters
Coral reefs along the Saudi Red Sea coast are among the region's most valuable natural assets, supporting marine life and coastal communities. As sea temperatures climb, bleaching events threaten reef health worldwide. Findings like these point to practical approaches that could one day help protect local reefs and the ecosystems that depend on them.
The work adds to a growing body of research based in the Kingdom that studies how Red Sea corals cope with heat stress, offering insight that may support conservation efforts along Saudi Arabia's coastline in the years ahead.
