The Saudi Water Authority has won five international awards in 2026 at the Asian Water Awards and Asian Power Awards held in Kuala Lumpur, in recognition of a series of projects advancing water and energy innovation.
The honours covered work carried out by the Water Technologies Innovation Institute and Research Advancement, the Saudi Water Innovation Center, and Water Oasis. Together, the projects highlight the Kingdom's growing role in developing new technologies for desalination, disinfection and sustainable resource use.
One of the awards recognized large-scale magnesium enrichment of drinking water produced from seawater at the fourth phase of the Al-Shuaiba production system. The system produces 400,000 cubic metres of water daily and serves more than 1.3 million people, improving the quality of water delivered to households.
Another award was given for a system that produces sodium hypochlorite for disinfection along with high-purity hydrogen from desalination brine, cutting energy consumption by 25% compared with conventional systems. A separate circular-economy award recognized a pilot project that extracts rubidium chloride from desalination waste, turning by-products into valuable materials.
Water Oasis in Rabigh was named Water Innovation Hub of the Year, while the Saudi Water Innovation Center received the Collaborative Water Initiative of the Year award for its innovation activities and Miyahthon programs.
For residents across the Kingdom, these developments point to more efficient, higher-quality and more sustainable water supplies, as the authority continues to invest in research that supports long-term water security for millions of people.
